Following the first Hop Sauce Fest, we knew we wanted Hop Sauce to have some kind of outdoor challenge component. After all, we live our lives around the wind and tides here on LBI.
Then our friends at South End Surf N' Paddle stepped up and decided to help us out by holding the Hop Sauce Tune Up the morning of the race. South End, owned by longtime locals Ken Gallant and Sheryl Paynter, is a full service paddle outfitter right in Beach Haven. For the last ten years, they've created a nice niche for themselves doing paddleboard rentals, tours and lessons for all ages.
This year the race is back. Each event, we see not only more serious competitors coming to race the Tune Up, but also more folks who are new to the sport and just looking for a fun race. While Hop Sauce has moved, the paddle race is still at the Taylor Ave. Waterfront, at 9 with registration beginning at 8 am.
You can do the two or the four-mile race. The winners are announced at Hop Sauce later in the day. The race is a fundraiser for Alliance for a Living Ocean, our eco-partner, who provides clean, cool, free water throughout the festival.
For experienced paddlers and those who have never raced before, come down and get your feet wet. It's a great way to earn your beer and tacos for the day.
